New iPhone OS Developer Policy
New iPhone OS Developer Policy
I’m glad I didn’t take the easy way out when it was offered and instead learned Objective-C. Apple has locked out cross-compilers (like Adobe’s Flash compiler for iPhone OS) as of today.
Operation NICE: NICE Assignment: Go a Day Without Shoes
A great post from Melissa about remembering how fortunate we are to live as we do. I’ll be going without shoes part of the day tomorrow. Join me?
By the way, if you haven’t yet done so, please help Melissa take Operation NICE to the next level by voting for her at the Pepsi Refresh Everything project. She’s in the running for a grant to promote the value of kindness through Operation NICE. It takes just a second, and you can even sign in with your Facebook account. Thanks.

Winter In Columbus Isn’t Done Quite Yet

Winter in Columbus isn’t done quite yet. It was nearly 60° F earlier today.
Zeldman on Standards, Flash and the iPad
Zeldman on Standards, Flash and the iPad
As he often does, Jeffrey Zeldman brings reason to the topic at hand. One of the best lines in this piece:
Developers who supplement Flash with HTML5 may soon tire of Flash—but Adobe has a brief but golden opportunity to create the tools with which rich HTML5 content is created. Let’s see if they figure that out.
An Adobe Flash developer on why the iPad can’t use Flash
An extremely thoughtful post. The most intelligent argument and reasoning I’ve heard (besides battery usage/resource hogging) regarding the absence of Flash from the iPad – and it’s coming from a Flash developer.
Conference calls: proof that more people can get less done.

Donald Trump, citing snow, says Al Gore should lose Nobel Prize
According to this story in USATODAY, Donald Trump, citing snow, says Al Gore should lose his Nobel Prize. Trump, you might be famous, but you don’t understand the first thing about science. Global warming, as a phenomenon, can actually contribute to drastic changes in weather, including snow storms. Global warming melts ice caps, which introduces fresh water into the sea, which changes salinity and temperature, thereby altering current flow, which…oh, never mind. YOU’RE FIRED.
Despite the fact that we are faced with a gradual warming trend on Earth due to the rise of emissions in the 20th century and continuing today, it’s my opinion that the weather the eastern half of the US is experiencing this year is simply part of a cyclical pattern, and we’ll likely return to more normal winters, perhaps as soon as next year.
The Wholesale Applications Community, as they’re calling it, thinks they’ll deal a blow to Apple. Here’s the thing: they’re not even competing. Apple will never allow third-party software outside of their control to run on an iPhone. They will always have control over how an application appears and functions on their device, with some functionality exclusive to that device. While I support the idea of community-based/open standards development, there is something strong to be said for Apple’s strict guidelines. It’s what makes the iPhone’s UI and its applications so striking. From a design and usability perspective, I seriously doubt that major success will result from this initiative.
UPDATE: In this article, CNN states that “Until now, Apple has had control of all apps that go on the iPhone.” Question: what on Earth makes them think that will change because of this alliance? Apple’s not going to bow to pressure from anyone to change anything about its platform or application structure.
